Surmodics Launches IOL Cartridge Coating Automation Center, Supporting Growth in Intraocular Lens Manufacturing
Surmodics has expanded its ophthalmic manufacturing capabilities with the launch of an IOL Cartridge Coating Automation Center at its facility in Horsham, Pennsylvania. The new center has been established to support automated coating and manufacturing processes for intraocular lens (IOL) delivery cartridges.
The initiative comes as ophthalmic device manufacturers increasingly focus on improving manufacturing consistency, production efficiency, and scalability across IOL delivery systems. IOL cartridges require precise internal surface characteristics to enable controlled and smooth lens delivery during cataract procedures.
The new facility combines hydrophilic coating technologies with application expertise, process development capabilities, and manufacturing automation. According to Surmodics, the setup has been designed to accommodate automated coating processes while supporting consistent treatment of critical cartridge surfaces.
One of the technologies being offered through the center is HydroBond 5/5, a hyaluronic-acid-based hydrophilic coating developed for IOL cartridge applications. The coating process incorporates rapid thermal curing, with both base-coat and top-coat stages designed around short processing times. This process architecture could support higher-throughput manufacturing environments where production efficiency and repeatability are important requirements.
Surmodics is also positioning the center as a flexible manufacturing resource for ophthalmic device companies. Solutions can range from integrating coating automation into existing production facilities to supporting outsourced cartridge coating and manufacturing programs. Such flexibility could allow manufacturers to align production models with product specifications, manufacturing volumes, and commercialization requirements.
The development also reflects the broader evolution of IOL manufacturing, where improvements in materials, delivery systems, automation, and production processes are increasingly being integrated into ophthalmic device development. As cataract treatment volumes increase globally and premium IOL technologies gain adoption, manufacturers are facing greater requirements for reliable and scalable production infrastructure.
Implications for the Intraocular Lens Market
The launch of Surmodics' automation center highlights the growing importance of manufacturing technologies within the broader intraocular lens market. While innovation in IOL design remains focused on improving visual outcomes, supporting components such as delivery cartridges also require advances in materials and manufacturing processes.
The global intraocular lens market is estimated at US$ 4.1 billion in 2026 and is projected to expand at a 5.7% CAGR between 2026 and 2035. Market expansion is being supported by the increasing burden of cataracts, growing adoption of premium and presbyopia-correcting IOLs, and continued development of advanced ophthalmic technologies.
Automation of cartridge coating and related manufacturing processes could become increasingly relevant as manufacturers seek to improve production consistency and accommodate growing demand for IOL-based procedures. Developments in hydrophilic coatings and automated processing may therefore contribute to efficiency improvements across the IOL delivery-system supply chain.
